GSt Council Meeting: 49th GST council meeting was held in the chairmanship of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman on Saturday. Several important decisions have been taken in the meeting. The Finance Minister said that GST rates have been cut on Raab (liquid jaggery), pencils and sharpeners. Sitaraman said outstanding compensation of states have also been issued. The Center has released Rs 16,982 crore to the states.
Important decision of the council meeting
- Students preparing for competitive exams have got a big relief. Now GST will not be applicable on examination fees, Till now 18 percent GST was levied on the examination fee.
- The recommendations of the GOM for GST over Pan-Masala and Gutkha have been accepted
- The decision to tax MUBs on the lines of SUVs has been postponed. The Council has also recommended rationalisation of late fee on delay in filing of Annual Returns

Pending GST compensation paid to states
Nirmala Sitharaman said that the full pending balance of GST compensation has been cleared. A total of Rs 16,982 crore has been given to all states. She said, “We have decided to reduce the GST rate on Rab from 18% to zero. But 5 percent GST will be levied on pack rab.” GST on pencil and sharpeners has been reduced to 12 percent from 18 percent, she said.
