Chennai: The residents of Madambakkam were shocked after the bodies of 30 dogs were discovered under the garbage on Sunday morning.
Residents passing by the rubbish dump at Colony Secretariat, Pathuvanchery, discovered the body and informed Councilmember 69th Ward Raj K, reported TOI.
A resident said he saw a bowl of milk near the trash can and they were suspecting that the dogs might have been poisoned to death. Selaiyur police were notified of the incident, no complaints were made and the dogs were buried with them.
A Selaiyur policeman said he would notify the public health department of Tambaram commune. The people of Tambaram have been grappling with the threat of wild dogs for some time.
Residents Seek Justice
Meanwhile the residents who had witnessed the tragedy have said that whoever is responsible behind the cruel activity should have been held accountable. Dawn Williams, chief executive officer of Blue Cross India, said people should notify animal shelters and ask for vaccinations and sterilization if they want to control the feral dog threat.
Residents also lamented the lack of hotline numbers to call ambulance services or provide immediate assistance to animals in distress.
Last year in September, mass killing of cannabies were being reported from Kerala. The state had seen many dog murders due to the increasing number of dog bites. People who are afraid of stray dogs even inject poison into street dogs to prevent attacks.
HC had ordered the state government to prevent people from carrying out law and order on their own by stopping the killing of animals. He also asked the police to take strict measures to deal with the offenders.
