Review: The way we see Christmas is like a celebration all around, with shining lights, smiling faces, Christmas trees, gifts, and family dinners. But amidst all this, there is a suspense thriller that only Sriram Raghavan can create. Based on the French novel ‘La Montre Charge,’ Shriram Raghavan and his team have woven this story set in 80s Bombay. Back when Mumbai was still called Bombay.

This story begins on Christmas night when Albert, after seven years, suddenly returns to the city. He meets his elderly neighbor, and then sets out to see the city lights. By chance, Albert collides with Maria, who has come out for a Christmas dinner date with her little daughter. However, the date disappears, leaving Maria alone with her daughter. Albert and Maria’s encounter continues until Maria invites him to her home for a drink that night. Here, the two share the story of being alone on Christmas, with a mix of reality and a bit of intrigue.

As the story unfolds, what starts as a potentially romantic evening takes a turn when a dead body disrupts their plans. Now, Maria’s truth must come to light, and Albert’s secrets are about to be revealed. More characters enter the scene, powerful twists occur, and the climax is something that you cannot even begin to anticipate.

Shriram Raghavan’s brilliance lies in the fact that he doesn’t force comedy from his characters in the story but creates situations that bring a smile to your face even in tense environments. The charm of old Bombay that my Christmas team has woven into the story adds a homemade old wine flavor, making the characters lost in its intoxication.

In Shriram Raghavan’s narrative, there is pain, romance, betrayal, loneliness, murder, suspense, and plenty of opportunities for you to play detective. It embodies Raghavan’s storytelling style that has captivated all his fans. You cannot compare it to his previous thrilling tales; in My Christmas, he has drawn new lines altogether.

Indeed, the biggest strength of My Christmas is its casting. The pairing of Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif is unimaginable, yet it becomes the soul of the film. Vijay Sethupathi, in every frame and every scene, embodies Albert as if he is advancing through the circumstances. Witnessing Katrina Kaif as Maria in the film will leave you astounded, as her portrayal is undoubtedly a showcase of her best acting. You’ll be amazed at how a good director can elevate an actor to such heights.

Sanjay Kapoor is exceptional in the film, and even in his small role, Vinay Pathak delivers a powerful performance. Radhika Apte and Ashwini Kalsekar’s cameo performances also contribute significantly to taking the film to its crescendo.

My Christmas is a splendid murder mystery that will provide you with immense pleasure in solving.
