Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, has outperformed Ranbir Kapoor’s film Animal in viewership on Netflix within just two months of its release. Since its debut on Netflix in March 2024, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has reached a notable milestone with 13.8 million views, exceeding Animal, which premiered on the platform on January 26, 2024.

The news of Laapataa Ladies outperforming Animal quickly spread among viewers and on social platforms. One Reddit user expressed excitement about the film’s success, urging others to watch the Kiran Rao directorial and noting its popularity in the UK and the enthusiastic reception from local audiences. The user shared that their friends, who had mostly watched films like Bahubali, were impressed by Laapataa Ladies, while another user commented that the movie deserves all the attention it’s getting.

Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande, is an adaptation of Biplab Goswami’s award-winning novel. The film stars Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, and Ravi Kishan in the lead roles and takes viewers to rural India in 2001. It follows the captivating story of two brides who mysteriously vanish during a train journey, leading to a series of twists and turns as their husbands set out to find the real bride.

Additionally, the film’s success comes amid a verbal spat between Kiran Rao and Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the director of Animal. Rao clarified in an interview that her previous comments on misogyny and the portrayal of women in films were general and not directed at Vanga’s work specifically, as she had not seen his films. In response, Vanga criticized her remarks, suggesting a misunderstanding of his films’ intent and stating, “This is entirely wrong,” regarding the interpretation of his work as promoting negative themes.

As Laapataa Ladies continues to receive attention and praise, it underscores the shifting dynamics in viewer preferences and the growing impact of thought-provoking narratives in contemporary cinema. This trend reflects the audience’s increasing appreciation for films that challenge traditional storytelling and provide deeper, more meaningful content.
