Who was Loretta Lynn?
Loretta is an American performer and singer, whose courageous songs and inspiring life story made her one of the most popular and celebrated artists of her time. She managed to build her image as a symbol of rural pride and determination.
Her music was rooted in the verities of honky-tonk country and the Appalachian songs she had grown up singing. The singer was born in Kentucky as Loretta Webb in 193. Lynn was one of eight siblings and the daughter of a coal miner – a fact that led to her signature song, 1970’s Coal Miner’s Daughter. Another of her songs include- “Hey Loretta,” a wry 1973 hit.
She was married at the age of 15 to 21-year-old Oliver Lynn. Loretta became a mother at 16 and a grandmother in her early 30s. Her signature song, Coal Miner’s Daughter also made it to an autobiography that became a best-seller.
Meanwhile, Oliver’s frequent infidelity and struggle with alcoholism made her see the worst. Even though, the couple managed to be together for 48 years. Oliver died in 1996.
Ms. Lynn’s 1966 hit “You Ain’t Woman Enough (to Take My Man)” was based on a confrontation she had with one of her husband’s mistresses.
