New Delhi: The Public Works Department approaches CPWD with a plan to reduce everyday traffic at East Kidwai Nagar, AIIMS, Safdarjung, and South Ex Market. According to media reports, they plan to build a skywalk on the AIIMS overpass and U-turn underpass close to Dilli Haat for people returning from New Delhi. In addition, the construction of an underpass loop to access the government housing colonies in East Kidwai Nagar is also planned.
According to the media report, a survey was performed to reduce congestion in the East Kidwai Nagar Redevelopment Colony, AIIMS, and adjoining areas by a top PWD officer. The current total traffic per hour was discovered to be 13,240, which is substantially higher than the HCM permits. According to the Highway Capacity Manual, there should be 11,200 PCUs here.
Every day, 11,612 trains pass through this station. The colony’s 1628 trains depart from these points. As a result, it has been decided to construct a U-turn underpass on Aurobindo Marg near Dilli Haat, as well as a skywalk around 750 metres above the AIIMS flyover, in order to reduce congestion in East Kidwai Nagar and the surrounding areas. The skywalk will also connect South X Market.
The bottleneck traffic on Aurobindo Marg is mainly caused by vehicles travelling from INA to AIIMS. The traffic from the Barapullah elevated road merges with the traffic on Aurobindo Marg as it moves towards AIIMS, Safdarjung, Dhaula Kuan, and IIT. Because of the adjoining building of the East Kidwai Nagar apartment block’s entry-exit gate, inhabitants of that block can also enter and go in their cars.
Traffic from three different locations is converging at one point. Those commuting from New Delhi and needing to return in this direction must now do so via AIIMS or by ascending the flyover. This increases traffic and congestion in the vicinity of the flyover and AIIMS. Every day, pedestrians attempting to cross the roadway from INA, Kidwai Nagar, Safdarjung, AIIMS, and South Ex Market face difficulties. There is even talk of building a skywalk above the AIIMS flyover in such a case. This comprehensive plan, which will be integrated with the INA-IGI Airport flyover project, has been presented to CPWD.
