New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday declined a plea moved by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Manoj Tiwari against the Delhi government’s decision to impose ban on firecrackers as a preventive measure to control pollution in the national capital.
Tiwari had filed the plea for urgent hearing as the festival is approaching.
Reacting to it, the apex court slammed the BJP MP asking him “to let people breathe clean air and spend money instead on sweets.”
Earlier in the day, similar petition was turned down by the Delhi High Court challenging Delhi Pollution Control Committee’s (DPCC) complete ban on selling and using of all kinds of firecrackers.
In the view of pollution in Delhi and its nearby areas, the environment minister Gopal Rai on Wednesday declared manufacturing, storing, and selling firecrackers in the national capital illegal.
He said that anyone who will violate the law will be entitled to pay fine of Rs 5,000 and three years in jail.
Those who will be seen buying and bursting the crackers will have to pay Rs 200 a fine and a six-month jail term.
