Kolkata: After the Trinamool Congress lost a recently held by-poll in the Sagardighi Assembly, Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee removed Ghulam Rabbani as Minority Affairs Minister and kept the ministry with herself.
In a cabinet meeting held on Monday, Mamata Banerjee took away Minority Affairs Ministry from Ghulam Rabbani and allotted the Horticulture Department to him. As per the sources, the change is part of the corrective measure since TMC’s loss in the Assembly by-poll.
The cabinet has also agreed to create a separate development board for minorities and migrant labourers. Sagardighi Assembly, situated in the Murshidabad district, has a huge Muslim population and is home to lakhs of migrant labourers.
The Sagardighi by-poll was held on 27 February 2023 after TMC MLA Subrata Saha died. Mamata’s party had been winning the seat since 2011. Congress Candidate Bayron Biswas won by over 22 thousand votes against TMC’s Debasish Banerjee in this by-election.
Earlier, the TMC had shuffled the faces in the party’s minority outreach wing: Mosaraf Hossain, MLA from Itahar appointed as the president of the TMC’s West Bengal minority cell.
