Karnataka: A young independent candidate submitted a deposit of Rs 10,000 in one-rupee coins, which he collected from voters during poll-bound in Karnataka, to contest the assembly election. The deposit cost for each candidate in this year’s election is Rs 10,000. The officers spent two hours counting the money on the table inside the Yadgir office.

Yankappa, an independent candidate from the Yadgir constituency, arrived at the Tahsildar’s office on Tuesday with a flag around his neck. The billboard featured images of Basaveshwara, a 12th-century social reformer, Kanakadasa, a Karnataka saint-poet, Swami Vivekananda, Dr B R Ambedkar, and the Constitution’s preamble. The candidate said that he walked on foot through the constituency and collected the coins from voters.

He has total assets of Rs 60,000 as an arts graduate from Gulbarga University in Kalaburagi district, while his father Devindrappa owns one acre and 16 guntas of land (40 guntas equal one acre).
