The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation recently passed a resolution proposing a name change for the district. Mayor Sunita Dayal confirmed the decision, highlighting that the proposal, backed by numerous Hindu organizations, will now be sent to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for final approval.

Mahant Narayan Giri, the head priest of Dudheshwar Nath temple, emphasized the ties to history, stating that these names relate to the city’s association with the ancient Hastinapur, once a dense forest inhabited by elephants (called ‘Gaj’ in Hindi). The proposed names pay homage to this heritage.

Giri pointed out that according to Hindu texts, Ghaziabad was initially known as Haranandi, after Lord Brahma’s daughter and Gangaji’s younger sister. The city’s ancient temple, Dudheshwarnath, adds weight to the proposal to rename Ghaziabad as Dudheshwarnath Nagar.
