7 Wonders of Maharashtra

Maharashtra, a land of diversity and contrasts, boasts a rich heritage of history, culture and natural wonders. From ancient caves to modern marvels, the state is adorned with treasures that captivate the hearts and minds of explorers from all over the world. Here is a journey to discover the seven wonders that distinguish Maharashtra from rest of the states:

The Ajanta and Ellora Caves:

The majestic Caves, in Aurangabad District, are rock cut caves, dating from the second century BC to about 480 or 650 CE. A UNESCO world heritage site, it has been described as ‘the finest surviving examples of Indian art, especially painting’ by the Archaeological Survey of India given its masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, with depictions of the Jataka tales and figures of the Buddha.

The Gateway of India:

The Gateway of India in Mumbai is an iconic and imposing structure that embodies the city’s colonial history and architectural grandeur. The monument was erected to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder on their visit to India in 1911. Built in Indo-Saracenic style, the foundation stone for the Gateway of India was laid on 31 March 1911. The final design of George Wittet was sanctioned in 1914 and the construction of the monument was completed in 1924.

The Elephanta Caves:

The Elephanta Caves are located in Western India on Elephanta Island (otherwise known as the Island of Gharapuri), which features two hillocks separated by a narrow valley. The small island is dotted with numerous ancient archaeological remains that are the sole testimonies to its rich cultural past. The main body of the cave, excluding the porticos on the three open sides and the back aisle, is 27 metres square and is supported by rows of six columns each.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus:

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus took over 10 years to build. The sandstone and limestone building is C-shaped—two wings extend out from a central domed structure. This form is borrowed from Indian palace architecture, while the towers and spires recall European castles and cathedrals. The largest and highest dome is centrally located above the middle section of the building, just above the clock.

Pandharpur Wari:

Millions of Devotees travel to Pandharpur to seek blessings at the renowned Vitthal Temple. This centuries old activity offers a procession of devotees known as ‘warkaris’ who travel hundreds of Kilometers and recite songs and dances offering prayers to the Lord. It concludes on the auspicious occasion of Ashadi Ekadashi when one can see the Holy City of Pandharpur turn into Unity, Dedication and Faith.

Shaniwar Wada, Pune:

Shaniwar Wada is a historic fortification located in the center of Pune. With great historic significance, it was formerly the seat of Peshwas. Built in the 18th century by Maratha Emperor Baji Rao I, this fortification boasts intricate woodwork carvings, elegant gates and barriers. Shaniwar Wada is still said to be a revered symbol of Maharashtra’s magnificent past, which attracts architecture enthusiasts and explorers.

Lonar Crater Lake:

Lonar Crater Lake is located in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district. The lake is said to be a natural wonder caused by a meteorite impact over 50,000 years ago. This lake is surrounded by exotic creatures and flora-fauna. Lonar Crater Lake surrounded by thick greenery and intriguing origin story, make it a must-see place for anybody interested to visit in solving nature’s mystic riddles.
