New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a boy living in a private shelter home was allegedly sexually assaulted by another boy in Jahangirpuri’s areaof northwest Delhi, said police officials.

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) claimed that the boy had told his ordeal to the manager of shelter home who asked him remain silent and took no action upon it. However, the accused has been arrested, said police officials, informing that an investigation has been launched in the matter.

On Sunday, a PCR call about the sexual abuse of a child in a private shelter was received at Jahangirpuri police station. Thus, a case was registered under section 377 (natural crimes) of the Indian Penal Code and under the Protection of Children from Sex Crimes Act (POCSO), a senior police official said.

The official said the suspect has been arrested and a further investigation is underway. The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has issued a notice to the city police about the incident and requested a report on the action taken by September 6.

Meanwhile, the DCW said it received a call about the incident on women’s helpline 181 on Saturday.

“It has been learnt that upon the death of his mother and re-marriage of his father, the survivor has been living in the shelter home for the past few years. He has informed that on August 31, when he went to the washroom in the evening, an older boy living in the home sexually assaulted him,” the DCW said.

“He has stated that he informed the manager of the home about the incident but he did not take any action,” it said.

DCW Issues Notice

The commission has sent notice to Delhi Police asking for a copy of the registered FIR in the incident and whether the manager and other staff at the shelter will be arrested under POCSO for not reporting the incident.

Swati Maliwal, the DCW Chairperson, also asked for details about such incidents at the shelter in the past as well as what action was taken on them. Delhi Police is expected to submit an action report to DCW by September 6, the commission said in its announcement.
