New Delhi: In a daring operation in Jahangirpuri, a head constable went undercover to bust a couple’s fake marriage racket. The dramatic event unfolded after the senior cop decided to set a trap by posing as a groom post receiving a complaint about a new gang operating under the guise of helping people. The trap successfully led to the arrest of a 38-year-old man Din Mohammad Mandal and his wife, who were accused of operating a fake marriage scam to extort money from victims.
This real-life marriage scam bears a striking resemblance to the plot of the popular movie Bunty Aur Babli. In the movie, a duo of con artists pulls off elaborate scams to deceive their victims. The scam first came to light in 2019 when a woman filed a complaint with the police regarding the couple who coerced her into marrying a man named Hariom under the influence of intoxication.
While Police arrested them along with another woman, the couple managed to evade capture for several years. A court declared them proclaimed offenders in September 2019. According to ACP (Crime) Sanjay Sain, the breakthrough came when they learned about a gang targeting individuals looking for brides. They extorted hefty amounts from victims by posing as the girl’s family and mediators.
To catch the culprits, head constable Surender posed as a groom and successfully arrested the accused from New Delhi’s Jahangirpuri. Police stated that Mandal and his wife had been posing as the bride’s sister and brother-in-law, collecting up to Rs 70,000 from each victim in exchange for a supposed marriage arrangement. Both had previous criminal records, with Mandal linked to a narcotics case and his wife facing similar charges in the past.
