Chennai: A PhD student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras committed suicide by hanging himself in his room in the Velachery area, Tamil Nadu, the police said on Sunday.
Sachin, a 32-year-old Phd student was a resident of West Bengal. This is the third such incident of suicide this year from IIT Madras. 11 students have committed suicide since 2018.

According to local police, on March 31, the student had posted a WhatsApp status in which he wrote, ‘I am sorry not good enough’. Police said that friends reached his house after seeing the WhatsApp status. Here he found Sachin hanging inside the room. After reporting the matter to the police, an ambulance was called and he was taken to the hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Police said that the investigation of the case is going on.

IIT officials said that the institute expresses its condolences on the untimely death of Sachin and shares the grief of the friends and family of the deceased student. The institute requests everyone respect the privacy of the student’s family during this difficult time. May the departed soul rest in peace.
Earlier on March 14, a third-year BTech student of IIT Madras committed suicide by hanging himself on campus. The deceased was identified as Vaipu Pushpak Sri Sai (20), a resident of Andhra Pradesh.
