MCD Building Survey: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) claimed that a total of 57 buildings in all 12 zones of the national capital have been declared dangerous in a survey of buildings conducted by the Corporation recently. However, Delhi BJP alleged that the MCD officials have only performed rituals in the name of dangerous buildings survey and they should conduct a real-time survey to avert tragic incidents.

According to the MCD building survey, around 30,74,051 buildings were surveyed across the 12 zones of Delhi out of which 57 structures were found dangerous.

“MCD maintenance department found 41 buildings and 16 structures were found dangerous by the building department of the corporation,” the report said.

“Delhi recorded 153 mm of rain in 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, the highest in a day in July since 1982,” informed India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As per a senior MCD official, the civic body has 20884 numbers of drains below 4 feet and the total length of these drains are 665 km. There are 700 numbers of drains which are 4 feet and above under its jurisdiction.

“The length of 4 feet and above drains are 453.42 km. The corporation has removed 86027.29 MT of silt from drains 4 feet and above. Further MCD has 72 permanent pumping stations to pump out stormwater at various locations,” he claimed.
Informing about the preparations to tackle the heavy rainfall and waterlogging in Delhi, he stated that the corporation has made special arrangements by deploying 480 portable pumps at vulnerable spots.

“MCD has directed all the zonal authorities to be vigilant towards the complaints received regarding water logging and falling off trees and resolve the complaints at the earliest,” an MCD official added.

Meanwhile, Delhi BJP spokesperson, Praveen Shakar Kapoor wrote a letter to the municipal corporation commissioner Gyanesh Bharti seeking a real-time survey of the dangerous and old buildings in the capital.

“In view of the raging monsoon this year, the Municipal Corporation should immediately conduct a real survey of the dangerous old buildings and shift the people living in them to safer places so that any accident due to the collapse of buildings during the monsoon can be prevented,” Kapoor said.

“This year MCD officials have only performed rituals in the name of dangerous buildings survey and in yesterday’s rain itself accidents of house collapse, balcony collapse, school wall collapse took place in Civil Line, Mukundpur, Seelampur, Srinivaspuri etc,” Kapoor asserted.

“Apart from sensitive areas like Chandrawal, Malkaganj, Mori Gate, Chandni Chowk, Lal Kuan, Ballimaran, Chitlikbar, Sita Ram Bazar, Sadar Bazar, Motia Khan, Pahar Ganj and Karol Bagh in Old Delhi, Seelampur, Shahdara, Narela, Nangloi, Mangolpuri, it has been suggested to pay special attention to Sangam Vihar, Kirari etc. areas where old dangerous buildings are in abundance” Delhi BJP spokesperson added.
