In a heartbreaking incident from Bengaluru, a 19-year-old BCom student named Priyanka B tragically died by suicide after falling victim to a ₹15 lakh investment scam orchestrated by her college mate. The incident occurred on November 29, 2024, in Rajajinagar, where Priyanka was found hanging from the balcony of her home.
The Scam
Priyanka was reportedly lured by her classmate, identified as Diganth, who convinced her to invest in online casino games with the promise of high returns. Trusting him, she handed over gold ornaments worth ₹15 lakh, believing it would yield profitable returns.
However, after the initial investment, Diganth began avoiding her and ultimately refused to return the valuables. According to police reports, he even threatened Priyanka, denying that she had ever given him any gold.
Circumstances Leading to the Tragedy
The situation escalated as Priyanka repeatedly requested the return of her gold but was met with hostility and deceit instead. In a deeply distressing turn of events, Priyanka left behind a suicide note detailing her anguish and accusing Diganth of mistreatment and betrayal. The note highlighted her despair over the financial loss and the emotional toll it took on her.
Her father, Bharath Kumar, a local goldsmith businessman, filed a complaint with the Rajajinagar police following the discovery of her body. The police have since registered a case under Section 108 of the Indian Penal Code for abetment to suicide and are conducting an investigation into the matter.
Community Response and Broader Implications
This tragic event has sparked outrage and concern within the community regarding the rising incidents of scams related to online gaming and investments. It underscores the vulnerabilities faced by young individuals in navigating financial decisions and trusting peers in potentially risky ventures.
Authorities are urging greater awareness about online scams and encouraging individuals to exercise caution when approached with investment opportunities that seem too good to be true.
As investigations continue into Priyanka’s case, it serves as a grim reminder of the severe consequences that can arise from financial deception and betrayal among friends. This incident not only highlights personal tragedy but also calls for systemic changes in how educational institutions address issues related to financial literacy and peer pressure among students.
