Things that should be done when the passport is lost
Immediately file a report of passport loss in the nearest police station, passport office or Indian embassy.
Keep a copy of the report with you. It is noted that the complaint report will be proof that you have lost your passport. This report also helps you to apply for a new passport or emergency certificate.

For applying for a passport you have two options
1) You can apply for a fresh passport
2) you can take an emergency certificate
If you opt to apply for the new passport, then you have to wait at least for a week to get the new passport.
It is noted that duplicate passports are not issued. However, a fresh passport with a different passport number can be issued with fresh validity.
Apply for reissue of visa
If you lose your passport in abroad, then your visa will also expire. But you can get your visa back through the embassy. You need to visit the embassy of the country concerned which issued your visa in the first place. You need a copy of your old visa and the police report of your lost passport. You will also need your new replacement passport and/or emergency certificate.
Pay attention to flight and travel insurance
Lose the passport and it may take time for you to get any type of document again. In such a situation, it may be difficult for you to catch your scheduled flight.
After that, you will have to book a flight for another day and talk to the airline. Although travel insurance is not mandatory for all visas, it is highly recommended to cover yourself during your travels.
