India gives 6 cranes to Chabahar Port in Iran to boost trade

New Delhi: Indian Ports Global Chabahar Free Trade Zone (IPGCFTZ), a division of India Ports Global Limited Mumbai and falling under the purview of the Ministry of Shipping, received six mobile harbour cranes from India. The transfer took place at the Shahid Behestti port in Chabahar, Iran, during the visit of Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and Ayush.

“The inauguration of the six mobile harbour cranes would act as a force multiplier for the operation of the Shahid Behesti Port and further fuel impetu to the development of the Chabahar port. The strategic role of Chabahar port to unlock trade potential in the regional trade between Central Asia, South Asia & South East Asia is huge. We are continuously working towards making the International North-South Transport Corridor the preferred route of trade between the two regions,” according to a ministry statement.

The possibility for commerce between Central Asian nations and South Asian, ASEAN, and even Far Eastern nations like Japan and Korea was discussed by both the Indian and Iranian sides. The Union Minister emphasised the contribution Chabahar port can make to cutting down on travel time, costs, and distance. A joint technical committee was established to ensure the port’s efficient operation. The future course of action for the port’s growth was also discussed at the discussion.

Sonowal, said, “Our shared historical relationship has been the seedbed of Indo-Iranian bilateral relationship. The sustained engagement and all round efforts in the preceeding years provide an ideal platform for further expansion and deepening of the bilateral relation. India remains fully committed to developing the Chabahar port”.

Over 4.8 million tonnes of bulk cargo have been handled at Shahid Beheshti Port since India Ports Global Private Limited (IPGPL) took over management of the facility. Various nations, including Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Germany, Oman, Romania, Russia, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, transshipped products.

The Port is likely to act as a catalyst to unlock the enormous trade potential in the region thanks to close collaboration between India’s IGPL and Iranian stakeholders, including Iran’s Port and Maritime Organization, Iranian Customs Administration, the Chabahar Free Zone Authority, Shahid Behesti Port Authority, and other stakeholders.

Along with other senior representatives from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, the Government of India, the Indian Embassy, and the representatives from the Islamic Republic of Iran, the meeting was also attended by Sepahi, Provincial Deputy Governor, and the Governor of Chabahar City, as well as Ebrahimi, Interim CEO of Chabahar Free Trade Zone Organization.
