New Delhi: Maruti Suzuki has revealed its plan to expand its CNG portfolio by producing half a million units in the coming financial year. With over 85 percent market share, the Indo-Japanese automaker currently leads the CNG segment in the country.

The company is planning CNG versions of its popular models including Alto, Baleno and Brezza. While the Maruti Alto CNG and Brezza CNG are slated to arrive later, the Maruti Baleno CNG is likely to hit the showrooms this Diwali season.

The Maruti Baleno CNG variant will feature a 1.2L Dualjet petrol engine paired with a factory-fitted CNG kit. The regular petrol engine provides a maximum output of 87 hp and a torque of 113 Nm. It promises an ARAI-certified fuel consumption of over 22 km/l.

The CNG version of the hatchback will have high mileage. However, its power and torque will be slightly lower than that of a regular gasoline engine. According to leaked information, the Baleno CNG will offer a range of 25 km/kg.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor will also introduce a CNG hatchback version of the Glanza, which is based on the Maruti Baleno. It will be available in three variants – S, G and V – with a petrol 1.2-litre four-cylinder engine and a CNG kit. The output of the hatch will be around 76 hp at 6000 rpm.

Transmission duties will be handled by a 5-speed manual gearbox. All Toyota Glanza CNG variants will carry a total weight of 1450 kg. Similar to the Baleno CNG, the Glanza will offer a fuel consumption of 25 km/kg. The Glanza CNG should be launched in the coming weeks.

In the latest updates, both the automakers recently launched their jointly developed mid-size hybrid SUVs – Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The SUV’s powertrain setup includes a 114bhp 1.5-litre petrol strong hybrid with an e-CVT transmission and a 103bhp petrol mild hybrid with a 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission.
