Yamaha RZ350: Yamaha has long had a cult following among automobile enthusiasts. Whether it’s the classic Yamaha RX100 or the Yamaha RZ350, the blue brand has plenty of nostalgia-inducing models in its arsenal. For the fans of the latter, there is good news that would sound music to ears. Yamaha has registered two new trademarks with the Japanese patent office, one for the RZ350 and one for the RZ250.

Yamaha Motor Corporation filed trademark applications on April 12, 2023, and they were published on April 20, 2023, which appears to be an exceptionally quick turnaround time. The trademarks appear to cover names rather than specific logos.

While they don’t reveal any specifics about any planned models that could use the RZ250 or RZ350 names, the class designation on the trademark provides some hints as to possible outcomes.

Many international intellectual property organisations have used the Nice Classification system (as in Nice, France, not “nice work, my dude”) to classify items into universally recognised categories since 1973.

According to rideapart.com‘s report, Yamaha sought trademarks in class 12 in this case. The World Intellectual Property Organisation defines this as:

  • Engines and motors for land vehicles
  • Land vehicle couplings and gearbox components
  • Vehicles with air cushions
  • Other than toys, remote control vehicles
  • Vehicle components such as bumpers, windscreens, steering wheels, tyres for vehicle wheels, and treads for vehicles

Rubber tracks for heavy-duty machinery (such as construction, mining, or agricultural equipment) are not regarded to qualify for this classification, nor are parts of non-land vehicles.

Similarly, trikes for children are considered toys, not vehicles, and hence cannot be classified under classification 12. (However, it’s unclear where an electronic balance bike would fall under this classification.)

Yamaha is clearly resurrecting these great names from the two-stroke era due to the memories they evoke—but what does Team Blue want to accomplish with them? Will they return on a pair of new combustion engines, or will Yamaha use them to usher in some new electric models? It’s all speculation at this point, so we’ll have to wait and see what the future holds.
