New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said Saturday made it clear that he still holds his long-held view that US President Donald Trump is a ‘fascist’ and a ‘despot’. However, after their first face-to-face meeting at the White House on Friday, he thinks there is an ‘opportunity’ to work together on lowering the cost of living for New Yorkers.
‘That’s Something I’ve Said In…’: Mamdani On ‘Fascist Remark On Trump
“That’s something that I’ve said in the past, I say it today,” Mamdani told NBC News following their meeting, when asked if he still stood by his decision to call the American President a ‘fascist’. Meanwhile, Trump told him jokingly, “That’s OK, you can just say it. It’s easier, it’s easier than explaining it.” After months of trading insults during the campaign, the two leaders interacted at the White House without apparent conflict and, in fact, appeared friendly.
“And I think what I appreciated about the conversation that I had with the president was that we were not shy about the places of disagreement, about the politics that have brought us to this moment, and we also wanted to focus on what it could look like to deliver on a shared analysis of an affordability crisis for New Yorkers, Mamdani told “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker on Saturday.
Mamdani Continues To Believe..
Mamdani made it clear that he continues to believe in everything that he had said about President Trump in the past and that he is visiting the Oval Office to deliver for New Yorkers. Meanwhile, the moment from their joint meeting on Friday quickly went viral.
The exchange between Trump and Mamdani marked a sharp shift from their earlier clashes, when the former labeled the latter a “100% Communist Lunatic.” The mayor-elect pointed to Trump’s campaign message in 2024, which included promises to lower costs on Day 1 of his second term as the President of the United States. “I shared with the president that when I asked those New Yorkers why they voted for the president, they told me again and again, it was cost of living, cost of living, cost of living.”
