New Delhi: Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the northeastern province of Liaoning on Tuesday, according to official media, after a two-week break from public events, implying they were at their annual summer conclave.
Xi paid a visit to a museum honouring a significant 1948 conflict in Jinzhou, Liaoning, according to a report from the official Xinhua news agency on Wednesday.
Before to Wednesday, there had not been any state media coverage of Xi’s activities for two weeks, despite the fact that his activities are typically covered on a nearly daily basis. This suggests that Xi and other top leaders had attended their annual secret summer meeting at the seaside resort of Beidaihe, east of Beijing.
Visitors and locals at Beidaihe have reported that security has been very tight recently.
This year’s Beidaihe conclave would be especially significant because officials are believed to have discussed personnel changes ahead of the ruling Communist Party’s once-every-five-years convention later this year.
At the forthcoming party congress, it is widely anticipated that Xi would win a record-breaking third five-year leadership term.
This week, after disappearing from public view for a fortnight, Premier Li Keqiang also made an appearance. On Tuesday, he held a videoconference on the economy with officials from seven of China’s biggest provinces while in the southern city of Shenzhen.
Xinhua stated that while in Jinzhou, Xi also observed local government efforts to avert floods and spoke with locals unwinding in a park.
