Trade negotiations between Britain and India will proceed despite allegations from Ottawa concerning the potential involvement of the Indian government in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada, stated a spokesperson for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Tuesday.
The spokesperson affirmed that the UK remains in communication with Canada regarding these “serious allegations” but stressed that they would not impact the ongoing trade discussions with India.
“Work on the trade negotiations will continue as before. The Canadian authorities will now conduct their work, and I’m not going to preempt them,” the spokesperson conveyed to reporters.
Spokesperson further emphasized that if they have any concerns regarding the countries they are in trade talks with, they will directly take it up with the concerned government.
However, as far as the current negotiations with the India is concerned, they are trade negotiations and we are not looking to conflate them with other issues.
