Who was Amrit Mandal? Second Hindu Man lynched in Bangladesh in Just one week after Dipu Chandra Das

Amrit Mandal, a 29-year-old Hindu man in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district, was lynched by a mob over alleged extortion, becoming the second Hindu victim after Dipu Chandra Das within a week.

After the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das earlier this week, another Hindu man has been beaten to death by a mob in Bangladesh, raising fresh concerns over mob violence and minority safety in the country. The latest incident took place late Wednesday night in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district. The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Amrit Mandal, also known as Samrat. Police said he was assaulted by a group of locals at Hosaindanga Old Market in Pangsha Upazila around 11 pm.

According to officials, Amrit Mandal was rescued by police in a critical condition and rushed to the Pangsha Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead around 2 am. The incident was later confirmed by Assistant Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debrata Sarkar, as reported by The Daily Star.

Who Was Amrit Mandal?

Police officials said Amrit Mandal was a resident of Hosaindanga village and the son of Akshay Mandal. Locally, he was known by the nickname Samrat and was allegedly associated with a group referred to as “Samrat Bahini.”

According to Pangsha Model Police Station officer-in-charge Sheikh Moinul Islam, Mandal had a criminal record. At least two cases, including a murder case, were registered against him at Pangsha Police Station.

Locals claimed Mandal had formed a criminal gang and was allegedly involved in extortion and other illegal activities for several years. Reports suggest he had been hiding in India for a long time before recently returning to his village.

What Happened on Wednesday Night?

According to police and local accounts, the violence broke out after Mandal allegedly demanded extortion money from a local resident named Shahidul Islam. On Wednesday night, Mandal and some members of his group reportedly went to Shahidul’s house to collect the money. When the family raised an alarm by shouting “robbers,” nearby villagers rushed to the spot.

The situation quickly spiraled out of control, and Mandal was allegedly beaten by a mob. By the time police arrived, he had already sustained serious injuries. He was rescued and taken to hospital but did not survive.

Police said the incident is being investigated and efforts are on to identify those involved in the assault.

Who Was Dipu Chandra Das?

Amrit Mandal’s killing comes just days after the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, another Hindu man, in a separate incident in Bangladesh. Dipu Chandra Das was allegedly attacked by a mob over accusations of theft. His death had triggered outrage and renewed debate about mob justice and violence against minorities in the country.

With two Hindu men lynched within a week, rights groups and observers have expressed concern over rising incidents of mob violence and the lack of accountability.

Growing Concerns Over Mob Violence

While police have maintained that both cases involved local disputes, the back-to-back killings have once again highlighted the dangers of mob justice. Authorities have assured that investigations are underway and legal action will be taken against those responsible.

The incidents have also sparked calls for stronger law enforcement and better protection of vulnerable communities across Bangladesh.
