Iran’s Supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei: Tehran has alleged that two powerful countries are after Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. The country’s Intelligence Ministry has stated that a plot is underway to assassinate Khamenei and destabilise the country. Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib has categorically stated that enemy countries are targeting the Supreme Leader. The news comes at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and Israel. This is not the first time Tehran has accused foreign powers of conspiring against the country and Khamenei. So who is targeting Iran’s supreme leader? Which countries is Tehran blaming for the plot to assassinate Ayatollah Khamenei?
Tehran accuses two countries of plotting to assassinate Ayatollah Khamenei
According to Iran, the US and Israel are involved in this alleged plot. Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib warned that those working in this direction, knowingly or unknowingly, are infiltrating agents of the enemy. He directly named the US and Israel. He added that these countries’ aim is to destabilise Tehran’s regime. Israel and Tehran are engaged in attempting to cause political turmoil in Iran. Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran’s former president, has also said he is worried about the Supreme Leader’s safety. Earlier this July, Khamenei claimed that Israel’s attacks on Iran were meant to stir unrest and topple the system by pushing people onto the streets. He said such an attempt was made, but did not succeed.
Israel-Iran Tensions
86-year-old Khamenei has been the Supreme Leader since 1989. He holds ultimate authority over all matters of the country. Therefore, it is believed that any attempt at a change of power in Iran while he is still in power is extremely difficult. This has led to accusations that the US and Israel attempted to assassinate Ayatollah Khamenei.
Israel and the US are aggressive on the issue of Iran’s nuclear program. In June of this year, Israel and the US launched massive attacks targeting Iran’s nuclear program. A ceasefire has been in effect between Israel and Iran since June 24th. However, despite the ceasefire, tensions between the two countries are still evident.
