Singapore’s long-ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), led by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has secured a decisive victory in Saturday’s general election. With this victory, PAP has registered its 14th consecutive mandate. It has won 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, while the opposition has failed to make any mark. There has also been an increase in its share of the popular vote to 65.6 per cent, up from 61.2 per cent in the previous election (2020). The PAP has been ruling the country since 1959, much before its independence in 1965.
People of Singapore have given clear mandate to Wong, who had become the fourth Prime Minister last year. Following PAP’s victory in general election, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong expressed gratitude and thanked voters for their strong support.
Wong wrote on X, “Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team.”
At a press conference, Wong declared the mandate as “a clear signal of trust, stability and confidence” by Singaporeans in the government led by PAP. He further mentioned that the election took place at a critical time. He noted that there has been fundamental shifts in the international order along with the global economic slowdown. Wong asserted that the election results have put “Singapore in a better position to face this turbulent world.”
Wong assured that the party will work harder for the development and progress of Singapore. He has urged Singaporeans to look at the collective future with confidence and drawn strength from this election.
In another post, Wong wrote, “So let’s stand as One Team Singapore–to confront the storms ahead together and secure a brighter future for all of us. We will involve Singaporeans in this journey to shape our future. We will engage and listen-because every voice is important.”
