The leadership of Nepal’s Interim Government has now been entrusted to Kulman Ghising. The Former electricity board CEO, Ghising, credited with solving the Himalayan nation’s power crisis, is likely to be picked by the protesting Gen Z to be the frontrunner for Nepal’s Prime Minister. The news came two days after KP Sharma Oli resigned from his post amid raging agitation against his government.
Earlier, the names of Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah and Former Chief Justice Sushi Karki were among those seen as acceptable candidates to lead Nepal’s Interim Government. On Wednesday, in a virtual meeting that lasted nearly four hours, members of the Gen Z movement decided to appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as their interim leader to represent them in upcoming discussions. The choice of Kulman Ghising by the protestors comes as a surprise.
Who Is Kulman Ghising?
Popularly known as a ‘patriot and everyone’s favourite’, Kulman Ghising is credited with ending years of load shedding in Nepal. Ghising has served as the former Electricity Board CEO. He studied electrical engineering at the Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, India, and later completed his master’s degree in power systems engineering from the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk, Tribhuvan University, in Nepal.
In 1994, Ghising steadily rose through the ranks. He was designated as managing director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in 2016. He soon became a household name for ending the 18-hour daily power cuts in the country. After being removed from his post, he was reappointed in 2021.
The Oli government had removed Ghising as NEA’s executive director in 2025, drawing widespread criticism from civil society and opposition.
