Justin Trudeau resigned from the post of Prime Minister of Canada and Liberal Party leader on January 7. Trudeau faced criticism and troubles within his party, which were the major reasons behind his stepping down. Also, there was a huge rise in inflation, corruption, and illegal immigration in the country. Trudeau’s political rating was constantly declining in recent surveys due to which there was a voice to change the leadership of the Liberal Party. As per the Canadian legislature, the Liberal Party has 90 days to choose the next Prime Minister.

Who Is Chrystia Freeland?
There are many names going in the market and one such name is Chrystia Freeland. Freeland was the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and finance minister but resigned from her post in December 2024. In her resignation, Freeland accused Justin Trudeau of mishandling with the finances of the country and he focussed on political gimmicks to make gains in the elections. Talking about his candidature as the next Prime Minister of Canada, Chrystia Freeland has a firm chance of becoming the Liberal Party leader and country’s next PM. Freeland was elected a Member of Parliament from Toronto Centre whereas later she represented University—Rosedale in 2015, 2019 and 2021.

Until the Liberal Party chooses its new leader, Justin Trudeau will serve as the caretaker Prime Minister of Canada. As per some reports, there isn’t much chance of the Liberal Party returning to power in the elections scheduled to take place later this year. However, changing the face of the Party might benefit the Liberals and they can defy all odds to win the upcoming polls.
