G20 Health Minister Meeting: Dr Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) praised India’s Ayushman Bharat scheme.
WHO head made the statement while addressing the ongoing G20 Health Ministers’ Meeting in Gujarat’s capital ‘Gandhinagar’ on Friday.
Tedros said that he commended India for its efforts in advancing Universal Health Coverage and the Ayushman Bharat scheme which is the world’s largest health insurance initiative.
He also complimented the telemedicine facility in Gujarat and Congratulated India for the Global Health Initiative, which is scheduled to be launched on Saturday.
The chief thanked India for its hospitality and insightful leadership in hosting the G20 Summit.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed that more than 70 delegates from different countries are participating in the G20 Health Minister’s meeting.
The three-day event under G20 India Presidency will end on August 19.
What is Ayushman Bharat
The central government launched the Ayushman Bharat scheme in April 2018. Under the scheme, health insurance of Rs 5 lakh is given for the treatment of poor and underprivileged people.
Ayushman card holders can visit hospitals registered with the scheme for free treatment for up to 5 lakhs. All the government hospitals including medical colleges and AIIMS and several private health care are registered with the scheme.
