Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus mentioned that the general election to take place in Bangladesh in late next year or early 2026 as per media reports.

Muhammad Yunus said that the time when the election will be conducted depends on the Electoral Reform Commission. He further stated that it is possible to conduct the election process by the end of next year, 2025.

He also mentioned that a specific time should be allotted to the election commission for the improvement of the electoral process.

Muhammad Yunus stated that, “If political consensus allows us, again, to conduct elections based on accurate electoral rolls with a few reforms, it may be possible to hold elections by the end of 2025.” Yunus acknowledged, however, that additional time might be needed to implement the necessary reforms.

He said, “And if we add to this the extent of reforms expected in terms of the electoral process and the Electoral Reforms Commission’s recommendations and on the basis another six months may be required.”

Yunus poited out that the timeframe for the elections in Bangladesh could be held between late 2025 and the first half of 2026. He further stated that, “Roughly speaking, the timing of elections can be fixed between the end of 2025 and the first half of 2026.”

The statements from Yunus came when there is political crisis going on in Bangladesh. In the month of August the movement led-by students ousted PM Sheikh Hasina. This happened after weeks of protests. During this around 600 people died. Sheikh Hasina fled to India, and an interim government led by Yunus took charge.
