The latest arms package being provided by the United States to Taiwan is drawing close attention from both regional allies and adversaries. What has led to widespread discussion is the inclusion of High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) in the package. HIMARS, a precision strike platform has gained global prominence for its battlefield effectiveness and is capable of launching guided rockets that can hit targets at distances of up to 300 kilometers.
The United States has recently approved the sale of weapons worth $11.15 billion to Taiwan. The weapons being supplied by the US to Taiwan include the HIMARS rocket launcher system. This decision by the Trump administration has triggered a sharp reaction from China. Beijing has condemned the arms sale, stating that by aiding Taiwan’s independence through this package, the US would ultimately harm itself.
What is the HIMARS rocket launcher system?
The HIMARS rocket launcher system is the most technically advanced, affordable and sustainable artillery system. Ukraine has also used this weapon against Russia. It is a modern and lightweight multiple rocket launcher system that can be mounted on a truck. It was developed for the US Army in the late 1990s. HIMARS offer maximum commonality with M270 platform launch systems and MLRS interoperability. The rocket launcher system carries a six-pack of GMLRS rockets, two Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM) or one ATACMS missile. It is specifically designed to launch the entire MLRS family of munitions.
The HIMARS, known for its precision targeting, is mounted on a 5-ton truck chassis of the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV). In combat situations, it can unleash a barrage of rockets to target enemy artillery, air defenses, and military bases. Another striking feature of this rocket launcher system is that it can be deployed to any location in minutes. It can quickly change position after launching its rockets, making it difficult for the enemy to locate its launch site. It can also be easily transported by aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules.
Why is US aid a major concern for China?
HIMARS is equipped with advanced GPS and inertial guidance systems. Its rockets can hit targets up to 300 km away. The distance from the coast of Taiwan to mainland China is approximately 180 kms. In addition to land-based targets, the system can also be used to engage Chinese warships if they venture into nearby waters. This strike capability is a key reason behind China’s strong reaction and anger over Washington’s decision to supply HIMARS to Taiwan.
