Pakistan: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed his willingness to talk with India saying that there is “nothing against anyone”.

Cash-strapped Pakistan is currently grappling with a severe economic crisis, as its $350 billion economy faces a meltdown. The country is reeling under the burden of a record-breaking 38% inflation rate, putting immense pressure on its citizens and businesses.

During the Mineral Summit’s opening ceremony in Islamabad, Shehbaz Sharif expressed Pakistan’s willingness to engage in dialogue with its neighbors to build stronger ties. Despite historical tensions since both nations gained independence in 1947, the Prime Minister seeks valuable engagement with neighboring countries.

“We are prepared to talk with our neighbors, provided they come to the table with seriousness to discuss important matters. War is no longer an option. Pakistan is a nuclear power, but we maintain this status for defense purposes, not aggression. The past three wars have only brought poverty, unemployment, and a lack of resources for education, health, and well-being,” PM Sharif emphasized.

He advocated for economic competition in the region as a more productive approach instead of resorting to conflict. “A nuclear flashpoint would lead to unimaginable consequences. War is not a viable option,” PM Sharif added. He acknowledged that normalizing relations with India requires addressing existing issues through peaceful and meaningful discussions.

India-Pakistan relations have been historically fraught, with concerns raised over Pakistan’s support for cross-border terrorism. The revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and its bifurcation into two Union territories by the Indian government in August 2019 further strained bilateral ties. This resulted in the expulsion of India’s ambassador to Islamabad and the suspension of bilateral trade.

PM Sharif also expressed a desire to work with the United States, seeking to restore the once “beautiful relationship” based on mutual respect and trust. He emphasized the importance of using available opportunities for the benefit of both countries and maintaining positive relations with other nations globally.

The opening ceremony marked Pakistan’s commitment to exploring diplomatic avenues and fostering better relations with neighboring countries and the international community.
