The Shiveluch volcano erupted some hours after a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake that happened off the eastern coast of Russia on Saturday night. According to TASS, an enormous column of ash rose to up to 5 miles high and released a substantial flow of lava. There are no reports of injuries at this point.
TASS said the ash column rose up to 8 kilometers above sea level. The quake, which the United States Geological Survey measured, hit 90 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a coastal city in Russia’s Kamchatka region, at 10:10 p.m. Moscow time on Saturday. It was a 49-kilometer-deep quake and was reportedly felt across the Kamchatka Peninsula, including in Vilyuchinsk, Yelizovo, and Klyuchi. Shiveluch is about 280 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Buildings inspected after reports of earthquake
While TASS said no major damage from the earthquake has been reported, buildings are being inspected for potential damage. The real-time earthquake tracking site, Volcano Discovery, received multiple reports of shaking. One person said there was shattered glass, falling chandeliers, and a shaking building. Another described swaying gas station canopies with shaking cars. A third person noted shaking furniture and rattling dishes.
Hazardous Tsunami warning
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued an alert for possible hazardous tsunami waves within a radius of 300 km from the epicenter along the coasts of Russia. It, however, confirmed that there was no tsunami threat to California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska.
