US woman Aurora used fake names like Flores, Velasco, and Alvarez to attract men in their 60s and 70s.
Mexican police have arrested a 43-year-old woman named Aurora Phelps for allegedly drugging and robbing many elderly men in Las Vegas over the past three years.
According to the FBI’s Las Vegas division, Aurora used dating apps to trick, drug, and steal from men between 2019 and 2022. Special Agent Spencer Evans from the FBI said, “This is a romance scam on steroids. We believe Aurora Phelps carefully targeted older men to drug them and steal from them.”
Aurora is now in custody and facing 21 charges, including identity theft, kidnapping that led to death, and wire fraud, according to Sue Fahami, an acting US Attorney for Nevada. She used fake names like Flores, Velasco, and Alvarez to trick men in their 60s and 70s.
The FBI said that Aurora also tricked younger men and sometimes women. According to the NY Post, Evans said, “Once she made her victims unable to move, Phelps stole their cars, used their bank and investment accounts to take money, charged items on their credit cards, including luxury goods and gold, and even tried to access their social security and retirement accounts.”
Evans said that one of her victims woke up from a coma after Aurora had drugged him with sedatives for about a week. On her Tinder profile, under the name “Sisy,” Aurora had written, “I am looking for friends. No fake people, no gente falsa.” After crossing the border and escaping, Aurora was arrested by Mexican police and is now waiting to be sent back to the United States.
Although the police have identified some victims, FBI officials believe there may be many more. They have posted photos of Aurora on their website, explaining her crime and asking people to come forward if they were victims. The FBI’s message says, “If you or someone you know believes they were harmed by Aurora Phelps or has information about this case, please fill out this short form. If you know someone else who might have been affected by Aurora Phelps, encourage them to fill out the form too.”
