The deal for the F-35 fighter jet between the United States and Saudi Arabia is not only a pact, but it would also create a stir across the Middle East.
Saudi Arabia was earlier in no mood to expand its military, but it has now shown interest in purchasing fifth-generation fighter jets from the United States. If Saudi Arabia buys F-35 fighter jets, it would be a big leap for the nation.
The F-35 Lightning II fighter jet is considered a superior class of aircraft. The jet features a radar-undetectable design, superior avionics, and striking capability. These are the same fighter jets that the US wanted to sell to India, and it may cause concern for India if the United States sells them to Saudi Arabia after the latter has signed a defence pact with Pakistan.
The question arises because the defence deal between the two nations states that an attack on Pakistan would be considered an attack on Saudi Arabia. In such a situation, would Saudi Arabia offer weapons to Pakistan in a war scenario? The US exports F-35s in a highly controlled manner, as it often ensures that such weapons are provided only to trusted partners.
Another question would arise as to whether the US will give such advanced aircraft to Saudi Arabia and whether it would allow Saudi Arabia to transfer them to Pakistan. This could be a potential risk for India.
For F-35 exports, the US requires the consent of other partner countries, security guarantees, as well as training and maintenance agreements.
If Saudi Arabia offers F-35s to Pakistan, it would pose a high political risk for the United States. The US would have to ensure that these aircraft remain secure and are not used by Pakistan.
Apart from this, other regional rival countries—such as Israel and India—would take this very seriously, and the US could face significant international pressure. On the economic front, F-35s are very expensive fighter jets, and their maintenance, running costs, and logistics become extremely burdensome.
If Saudi Arabia gives F-35s to Pakistan, the arrangement may come with strict controls. Both Saudi Arabia and the United States would have to ensure that Pakistan does not use these aircraft against their friendly nations. For India, this would become a new strategic challenge. Although it is highly unlikely that this would ever happen, it cannot be completely ruled out.
