US President Donald Trump censured Elon Musk’s plans to open a Tesla manufacturing facility in India. Trump’s remarks came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Musk in Washington DC.
While speaking to Fox News, Trump said the United States has been exploited by foreign countries, particularly India, due to high tariffs.
Trump said, “Every country in the world takes advantage of us, and they do it with tariffs. They make it practically impossible for him [Musk] to sell a car, as an example, in India.”
The US President said if Musk wants to set up a facility in India, that would be Okay but it’s unfair to America, very Unfair.”
Elon Musk who was also present in the interview along with Trump, backed the President’s viewpoint, stating that India charges 100% import duty on automobiles which is a policy that “frustrates” foreign manufacturers.
“The tariffs are like 100 percent,” Musk said.
Trump already stated that he is in favour of reciprocal tariffs. Trump had said, “I told Prime Minister Modi yesterday, ‘Here’s what we’re going to do: reciprocal. Whatever you charge, I’m charging.”
