India has consistently advocated for resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. During the Saturday call, PM Modi reaffirmed the country’s steady and consistent position in support of a peaceful settlement and expressed India’s backing for efforts aimed at the earliest possible restoration of peace.
A day before Prime Minister Modi’s visit to China for the SCO Summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with him over the phone and later took to X to share his thoughts on India. He stated that India supports all efforts toward a peaceful settlement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and will deliver the “appropriate signal” to Russia. Modi is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Reports also indicate that Zelenskyy called PM Modi on Saturday, expressing his readiness for talks with Russia’s top leadership and stressing that the war must begin ending with an immediate ceasefire.
In a social media post, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated that India is ready to take necessary steps and deliver the appropriate signal to Russia. However, the official statement from India did not mention this.
“We coordinated our positions ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. The end of this war must begin with an immediate ceasefire, with the necessary silence. This position is understood and supported by everyone. It is impossible to speak meaningfully about peace while our cities and communities are under constant fire. India is ready to make the necessary efforts and to deliver the appropriate signal to Russia and other leaders during the meetings on the sidelines of the summit. Thank you.”- Zelenskyy wrote.

Zelenskyy also briefed Modi on his August 18 meeting with US President Donald Trump in the White House that took place three days after Trump held a summit with Putin in Alaska.

“It was a productive and important conversation, a shared vision among partners on how to achieve real peace. Ukraine reaffirmed its readiness for a meeting with the head of Russia,” Zelenskyy said.
