Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday reacted to United States President Donald Trump’s accusation of Kyiv showing “zero gratitude” to the US on the latest peace proposal amid ongoing negotiations in Geneva. Notably, the US representatives and Ukraine met in Geneva on November 23 to discuss the US peace proposal, focusing on achieving a just and lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict, according to a joint statement issued after the meeting.
Zelenskyy on Trump’s ‘Zero gratitude’ remark
In a post on X, Zelenskyy affirmed that Ukraine is grateful to the US, Americans and President Trump for all the assistance and efforts aimed at ending the four-year long war with Russia. He also thanked Europe, G7, and the G20 nations for their support in saving Ukrainian lives, emphasising that their backing is important to Kyiv. Zelenskyy reiterated that it is important to work closely and carefully at every step toward peace to ensure that the war truly ends and does not happen again.
“Ukraine is grateful to the United States, to every American heart, and personally to President Trump for the assistance that – starting with the Javelins – has been saving Ukrainian lives. We thank everyone in Europe, in the G7, and in the G20 who is helping us defend life. It is important to preserve the support,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.
“That is why we work so carefully on every point, on every step toward peace. Everything must work out the right way – so that this war is truly ended and so that it does not happen again. Thank you to everyone who is helping! Thank you, America! Thank you, Europe! I am proud of our people. Glory to Ukraine!” he added.

What did Trump say?
Zelenskyy’s response came after Trump hit out at Ukraine’s leaders, accusing them of being ungrateful in a further sign of deteriorating relations between him and President Zelenskyy. In a post on Truth Social, he also stated that the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, would have never happened with “strong and proper” US and Ukrainian leadership.
“UKRAINE “LEADERSHIP” HAS EXPRESSED ZERO GRATITUDE FOR OUR EFFORTS, AND EUROPE CONTINUES TO BUY OIL FROM RUSSIA,” Trump said.
US-Ukraine Geneva talks
Meanwhile, talks between the US and Ukraine in Geneva were described as “constructive, focused, and respectful,” underscoring the shared commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace. “Both sides agreed the consultations were highly productive. The discussions showed meaningful progress toward aligning positions and identifying clear next steps,” the statement said. It added that any future agreement must “future agreement must fully uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and deliver a sustainable and just peace. As a result of the discussions, the parties drafted an updated and refined peace framework.”
