The government of the United Kingdom has decided to place new conditions for international students by making language requirements mandatory for those seeking work visas in the country.
Along with this, the nation has also reduced the job search period for international students at the graduate level to 18 months.
According to a report published by India Today, the new rules would affect Indians the most, as they formed the largest group to travel to the UK for education and work visas in 2023.
The new rules will come into effect from January 8, 2026. Applicants for high-potential jobs will have to prove their proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening tests in English at a B2 level—equivalent to A-level English, BBC reported.
According to The Daily Mail, the move comes after political parties criticised the government for poor immigration policies in the country.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said that migrant workers must possess English language skills as they will contribute to the national life.
According to The Daily Mail, international students will be allowed to stay in the country for only 18 months to search for a job after completing their studies, with the rule coming into effect from January 2027.
Students will also have to arrange more finances, as the required amount has been raised to £1,171 from £1,136 to cover nine months of living expenses outside London.
