In order to ensure the safety of the citizens, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced the forthcoming ban of American XL Bully dogs by the end of the year. This restriction is a response to concerns raised by a recent fatal dog attack in Staffordshire. Sunak characterized these dogs as a “danger to our communities” in a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, and emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing further attacks and safeguarding the public.
He expressed his deep concern about the menace posed by American XL Bully Dogs, particularly to children, and noted the disturbing trend of recent attacks. Sunak stressed that this was not an issue solely related to poorly trained dogs but a recurring pattern of behaviour that needed addressing urgently. He reassured the public that measures were being developed to counter these attacks effectively.

Sunak further disclosed that he had instructed his ministers to define the specific breed of dogs responsible for these attacks, with the aim of prohibiting them under dangerous dog legislation by the end of 2023. He highlighted the need for rapid progress in defining the breed, which is not currently recognized in law.

This decision follows a fatal attack near a school in Staffordshire, where a man sustained life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to them. Additionally, an 11-year-old girl, two men, and other individuals suffered injuries from an American XL bully crossbreed dog in Birmingham recently, prompting the arrest of a 60-year-old man on suspicion of possessing a dangerously out-of-control dog by West Midlands Police.
