In a tragic incident that occurred early Monday, a Turkish cargo plane skidded off the runway, plunging into the sea while landing at Hong Kong International Airport. At least two workers were killed when the aircraft arriving from Dubai collided with a ground-service vehicle. According to reports, at approximately 3.53 am, Emirates SkyCargo flight EK9788 touched down on the north runway 07R after departing from Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC).
The cargo plane, operated by Turkish carrier Air ACT, reportedly swerved left when landing before partially sinking into the sea adjoining the runway. The freighter tore off one of its wheels after colliding with a ground-service vehicle while landing. During the accident, two male staff members were ejected into the water and were recovered around 5 am. The unconscious driver was rushed to North Lantau Hospital, but was declared dead later, while the passenger died at the spot.
Meanwhile, four crew members aboard the plane were safe, reports added. Rescue operations were promptly carried out throughout the morning, and a Flying Service helicopter was dispatched to search the area. The Hong Kong airport’s north runway has been shut currently amid an ongoing investigation. A Cathay Pacific flight, awaiting landing clearance, was compelled to divert to the south runway.
