Turkey has taken a major step forward in military aviation with its unmanned fighter jet Kizilelma successfully completing a historic air-to-air missile test. The test proved that an unmanned combat aircraft can identify, track, and destroy a moving airborne target using radar guidance an achievement that marks a breakthrough not only for Turkey but also for global aviation.
A Historic Missile Test in Sinop
The test took place over the waters near the Sinop firing range, where the Kizilelma was assigned to track a jet-powered aerial target. According to reports, the aircraft used Aselsan’s Murad AESA radar to detect the target from long range. Once locked on, it launched a Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Gökdoğan air-to-air missile mounted under its wing.
The missile flew directly toward the target drone and scored a precise hit, demonstrating that an unmanned jet can perform one of the most complex tasks in modern combat—radar-guided aerial engagement. Observers described the moment as a milestone that could reshape future air combat strategies worldwide.
Advanced Tracking and Low Radar Signature
During the test, five F-15 fighter jets accompanied Kizilelma as part of the flight mission. The unmanned aircraft’s radar identified and followed the fast-moving target without assistance. Its low radar signature and long-range sensing ability allow it to “see without being seen,” giving it a significant advantage in both defensive and offensive operations.
With this test, Kizilelma has proved it can take part in air-to-air as well as air-to-ground missions, making it one of the most versatile unmanned combat platforms currently under development.
Turkey’s Growing Drone Power
Kizilelma is being developed by Baykar, a company that has quickly become one of the leading names in the global drone market. Baykar has generated $1.8 billion in export revenue in both 2023 and 2024, with nearly 90% of its earnings coming from international sales.
For the last four consecutive years, the company has also been Turkey’s top exporter in the defense and aerospace sector. The successful Kizilelma test is expected to further strengthen Turkey’s reputation as a rising technological and military power.
