As reported by the Centre Sismologique, the earthquake had a shallow depth of approximately 10 km and was followed by at least two aftershocks.

Shallow earthquakes are usually more hazardous than deep earthquakes because the seismic waves from shallow earthquakes travel a shorter distance to the surface and on the surface have a stronger shaking effect and a greater chance of damaging structures and generating casualties.
