US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday for crucial high-stakes talks described as “very productive” and “mutually respectful.” The two world leaders discussed ways to end the Ukraine conflict, one of the deadliest in Europe in the past 80 years.
Making it clear that “there is no deal until there is a deal”, President Trump indicated that there was no proper resolution during the meeting. However, President Putin termed the talks “thorough and useful”. The Russian President also said that Russia was “sincerely interested in putting an end” to the Ukraine conflict, but flagged “legitimate concerns” that need to be considered.
The two world leaders addressed a joint press conference after three-hour marathon talks on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The war has left thousands of people dead, while Moscow is yet to relent, making rapid gains just before the summit. However, the two leaders avoided questions from journalists.
“We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to. There are just a very few that are left,” Mr Trump told reporters, adding: “We didn’t get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there.”
“Negotiations took place in a constructive and mutually respectful atmosphere”. “They were very thorough and useful. “We hope that the understanding we have reached will… pave the way for peace in Ukraine,” said Putin.

He also said Moscow expected “that Kyiv and the European capitals will perceive all this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles”.
The Russian President also warned against “attempts to disrupt the emerging progress through provocation or behind-the-scenes intrigues.” “I have said more than once that for Russia, the events in Ukraine are associated with fundamental threats to our national security,” he said.
