The United States is reportedly formulating a long-term strategic plan to divide the Gaza Strip into two distinct zones. According to a report by The Guardian, the division into a ‘green zone’, the eastern part, under Israeli and International Security Force (ISF), is where reconstruction would start, while the ‘red zone’ would be left in ruins.
The United States’ Plan To Divide The Gaza Strip
Under the proposal, the red zone, which is the western portion of Gaza, was heavily damaged during the two years of the Israel-Hamas conflict. No reconstruction is scheduled here in the near future. According to the report, foreign forces and Israeli soldiers will initially be deployed in the devastated eastern part of Gaza, divided by the ‘yellow line’, as per reports based on US military planning documents.
America’s military plan sparks concern about Washington’s commitment to convert the ceasefire agreement signed in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh on October 13 into a political settlement with Palestinian rule across the war-torn city, as promised by US President Donald Trump.
Green Zone
Hundreds of troops are expected to be initially deployed in the eastern ‘Green Zone’, potentially scaling up to 20,000. After approval by the UN Security Council, reconstruction efforts, including humanitarian aid, special trade zones, and employment & security boost plans, will be implemented.
Red Zone
In contrast, the western Red Zone in the Gaza Strip along the Israeli-controlled Yellow Line will not see any rebuilding efforts and will continue to be left in ruins. This region reportedly houses approximately 2 million displaced Palestinians. No redevelopment is planned for this area.
