The United States will impose a sweeping 50% tariff on products imported from India beginning August 27 as punishment for energy imports from Russia. The administration’s latest draft notice outlines the White House’s intention to exert economic pressure and implement increased levies on New Delhi. The notice, published on Monday by the Department of Homeland Security, confirmed the new duties are set to take effect at 12:01 am EST on Wednesday.
The US tariffs implement President Trump’s Executive Order 14329, signed on August 6. The notice issued through US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) states that the additional 25 percent tariff would hit Indian goods that are “entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on August 27, 2025.” The trade imbalances are marked by America’s stalled negotiations to broker a peace between Russia and Ukraine.
The relationship between India and the United States has deteriorated since the Trump administration targeted New Delhi over discounted energy imports from Russia. Donald Trump announced plans to double down on Indian products earlier this month. Trump said that Washington will increase tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 50% as punishment for buying Russian crude oil and in hopes of exerting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war against Ukraine.
Donald Trump met Putin at a summit in Alaska on August 15, 2025. He also met several European leaders, including Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at the White House. However, his effort to arrange a face-to-face between the Russian President and the Ukrainian President has so far failed to yield results.
