At least three Chinese workers were killed when a drone “launched from Afghan territory” struck a camp in the Khatlon region on Wednesday, Tajikistan authorities said. The Tajik government has strictly asked authorities in Kabul to take action to prevent such incidents in future.
According to Tajikistan media reports, the attack targeted the LLC Shohin SM workers’ camp near the 1st Border Guard Post “Istiqlol” in the Yol Border Detachment. LLC Shohin SM, is a Chinese-linked company operating in Tajikistan, near the border with Afghanistan.
Tajikistan condemns the attack
The Tajik Foreign Ministry stated that an unmanned aerial vehicle carrying grenades and firearms hit the site, killing three workers who Chinese citizens and employees of the company. The ministry condemned the attack, claiming that “criminal groups” operating inside Afghanistan were responsible for the drone strike.
Tajikistan officials have urged Afghanistan government to take “effective measures” to ensure stability and security along the border. “The attack, carried out with firearms and a drone loaded with grenades, claimed the lives of three employees of Chinese nationality,” it said in a statement. “Criminal groups located in Afghanistan continue to commit acts aimed at destabilising the situation in border region,” the Tajikistan foreign ministry added.
