Last year on the day of Christmas, a football sized asteroid passed close to the earth. It was around double the distance from the moon, as per media reports. The asteroid has been given a name that is 2024 YR4.
After two days of this incident, astronomers from the observatory in Chile worked on it by studying it. They found that this rock may collide with earth in future.
As per NASA and European Space Agency, chances of it hitting the earth on December 22 in 2032 is 1.6 percent. If it strikes Earth then it may cause massive destruction locally. Scientist calls it a ‘City Killer’ asteroid. It could destroy a major city. The collision may release the energy which is likely to be equivalent to eight megatons of TNT, which will be 500 times powerful than the Hiroshima bomb.
According to media reports, if 2024 YR4 strikes the earth, the impact of this can be felt in South America, Arabian Sea, South Asia, Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean and Africa. According to media reports, this can bring tsunamis and cause massive destruction locally.
As per media reports, the asteroid is going away from Earth but will be coming closer to Earth again in 2028. Scientist and the scape agencies are keeping their eye on it.
As per reports, China has began forming a special defence team in its space research institute. As per South China Morning Post, National Defence Technology Administration of China has made an announcement regarding recruitments for asteroid monitoring and early warning research.
