Today, we’re talking about a railway station that is in the news for its grand appearance and enormous size. This station resembles a palace, and its most distinctive feature is its 44 platforms. It is considered the world’s largest railway station.
While Hubli Railway Station in Karnataka, India, holds the distinction of having the world’s longest platform, the largest railway station is Grand Central Terminal in New York City, USA. Completed in 1913, it took 10 years to build. This station can accommodate 44 trains simultaneously. It has a total of 67 tracks, 41 of which are on the upper level and 26 on the lower level. There are also two underground levels.
The station is so vast that approximately 19,000 items are lost there each year. Around 660 Metro North trains operate daily, carrying approximately 125,000 passengers. Spread across 48 acres, the terminal is not only equipped with modern amenities but also a sight to behold. Its grand design makes it a popular tourist destination, and has been the site of several Hollywood films.
The station also boasts a mysterious “secret platform” located beneath the nearby Waldorf Astoria Hotel. It is said that US President Franklin D. Roosevelt used this secret platform to exit the hotel directly. However, this platform was never opened to public passengers.
