New Delhi: Intense internal clash broke out in Sudan which began on April 15. It has been almost 2 weeks since the war broke out between the country’s regular military and its main paramilitary forces, killing approx. 400 civilians until now.

The reason behind the coup is for attaining “Power”.

How it all started?

Omar al- Bashir, the man who founded the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a collection of militia which, is the country’s Paramilitary forces that was formed more than 20 years ago. The reason for its formation arose due to the political and economic segregation of the local people by Sudan’s government.

After Bashir’s fall in 2019, efforts were made to transform into a democratic civilian-led government but weakened. The diplomats in Khartoum warned about the outbreak of violence at the beginning of 2022.

Rivalry between the two forces.

The RSF, Sudan’s paramilitary led by Hemedti, and the Regular military forces led by Burhan joined hands to outcast Bashir in 2019.

It all went wrong when a power-sharing deal with the civilians which was supposed to make happen the transition towards a democratic government, was intervened by a coup in October 2021. The coup resulted in putting the RSF army back in charge causing weekly protests. Hemedti and Burhan’s relations started getting worse as Hemdeti was not in favour of this new transition.

What’s at stake?

Sudan’s 46 million people could have come out from decades of autocracy, internal conflict and economic isolation under Bashir.

But, as the situations have gone worse with the current fighting, it might result in losing prolonged hopes with destabilising a volatile region surrounding the Sahel, the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa.

As the tension rises, it could also bring stress to Russia and United States relations.

Operation Kaveri

On Monday, India’s Minister of External Affairs, Subramanyam Jaishankar announced launching Operation Kaveri to bring home back stranded Indians.

Under Operation Kaveri, the Ministry of External Affairs is working tirelessly to rescue Indians in buses from conflict zones in Khartoum and affected areas to Port Sudan from where they are being travelled to Jeddah in Indian Air Force’s transport aircraft and Indian Navy’s ships.

From Jeddah, they are being taken home on28 either commercial flights or IAF aircraft.

Stranded Indians were brought home from the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah.

Till now 1,360 Indians have been brought home, as per official data.
